Steppin' (dubwise and otherwise)

First of what may end up being several mixes this week. The Grubstep Mix (get it?) is Up. Warts and all. After spending so much time getting everything on the Mashit mix as flawless as possible, I thought it would be fun to post a live set of dubstep and grime. Seems a lot of people spend quite a bit of their time worrying about whether DJs are mixing live or not, so this one's for them (heh heh). No, seriously, there are some shockingly obvious record pushes in there, I'm especially sorry for the ones in Horror Show (sorry DMZ crew...), but even so, I maintain that no one who isn't a DJ really cares if the mix works. Choons are wikkid enough...

BIG BIG ups to Hallucinogenesis, who answered my plee and is hosting the mix. If you know him, shake his hand. And, if your bittorrent-minded, do him a favor and try getting it by torrent. Get that here. (Looks like he's got some other good stuff there, including Auratheft). If all goes well they'll be another live mix from me in a month or so. Also will create permalinks to these post in the sidebar.

thanks for the mix. great stuff, especially it's good to hear dubstep from wuthin the scene being mixed with other things. Unlike others with similar eclectic tastes you make it work in the mix which is vital. Good to hear Wasteland among those tracks as well.

Cheers

DLng now - looks good.

Seems a lot of people spend quite a bit of their time worrying about whether DJs are mixing live or not, so this one's for them (heh heh).

Meeoooww! Still sore about that eh? I must really have touched a nerve there considering this is the second time youve mentioned it on yer blog... gives me the impression that your a lot more worried about it then me...

Just one thing:

but even so, I maintain that no one who isn't a DJ really cares if the mix works. Choons are wikkid enough...

I know your trying to prove some kind of point here, but dya not think this is just a TINY BIT arrogant and condesceding towards your audience? They may not 'care' in the abstract sense, but they do have ears - and presumably would rather hear a good mix over a trainwreck..

And if the tunes are so 'wikkid' that they speak for themselves, then why bother mixing them at all? Isnt there a bit of a contradiction there?

The way I see it, If yer gonna do a mix, do the best job you can.. we all fuck up mixes, but the main difference between a good DJ and a bad DJ IMO is quality control over what they put out...

But what do I know? - after all, its "about the music man" and "its all good" anyway... ;)

PS: I still owe you a reply on Subvert, Ill get back to you soon..

BTW - just flicked through the mix, and thought I should add a comment..

Considering it was done at a gig, presumably with all the added hassle of dealing with PA monitors and room echo, its not bad at all..

The mixes around 'Respect Me' and 'Leaglize the Dub', are a bit wobbly alright, but well done for having the balls to drop a 'live' tune into the mix.. that always causes problems..

Anyways - keep it up.. theres a well selected variety of tunes there, and the idea is good... I think a reggae/dub/dubstep mix done in a similar manner in the studio would be a real keeper..

Ah … Droid, you’re back!

Hmmm … you were actually far from my thoughts when I wrote that, so be careful about reading too much into statements.

In fact, I am actually responding in my head/”out loud” to a discussion string on a mailing list that I’m in, and as such I realize now it was probably slightly silly/bad form to mention it in a public setting without giving the back storyThe short shock without the prep time.

Now, the thread was on exactly the topic we were debating before and some other stuff associated with it. And while there is lively discussion on that list, it’s all DJs and really only about 6-8 people post with 10 more chiming in occasionally. That from a list with several hundred members I’m told. It was a sort of nexus-discussion of was so and so a good DJ and if not why not and why shouldn’t we all be DJing at the show instead, and then the thing that absolutely killed me, the question of “Is a DJ a Musician” and someone saying “Absolutely not, no way” and several other people saying variants of “If XY Sigma DJ times pi/Crowd Response delineated out over time then yes conditional on barometric pressure of the three previous days”… Something about it made me clutch my head, NOT because these aren’t valid points to consider and debate and have opinions on, it’s just that when DJs get together in a virtual setting it often turns to discussion of that stuff and I’ve already clearly sorted out in my mind my opinion and I don’t feel I’m gonna change anyone on that board’s beliefs. I didn’t actually even chime in at all since I couldn’t really think of anything to add at the time. Although someone actually linked to our previous discussion.

As I’ve spent more and more time promoting gigs, writing about music, considering returning to school for ethno-musicology, hanging out with people at clubs, going to nights with different crowds AND as I’ve been become integrated into scenes that care less and less about the things Djs talk about (Bhangra, Dancehall, Breakcore, etc…), my patience sometimes wears thin for such DJ-only forum hand wringing that often loses perspective of why 90% of people are there in the first place.

Although clearly not entirely, because here I am writing about it.

Not that, as far as my DJ style goes, my more open belief these days of what makes a good DJ good stops me from giving myself an overwhelming level of self reproach for not being a smoother, better, more Photek in his heyday style selector … for the very reason that I, and anyone else in the audience I think on either a gut or conscious level, gets a real kick out of hearing flawless mixes. It’s a mind-blowing human achievement. As such, my statements is definitely kinda in left field anyway and could be seen as disrespectful without the backstory, which now everyone has. Besides, it wasn’t much of a backstory anyway, just a series of thoughts.

So, in the end, my bone for bringing up something with no background to it … but that’s kinda why I have the blog. Public buffoonery.

Glad you like the mix though… I rather proud of it too. Wish more than 15 people had been there for the set…

Oh, can I just say the best statement that came from that discussion that just about had me rolling on the floor laughing in appreciation was: “It's one thing when you have a passable DJ crony who's much less satisfying than a good local; it's another when the crony sounds like DJ Fisher Price with his My First DJ Booth all-trainwreck performance.” Ups to Light Touch ( http://www.gourmetbeats.com/main.htm ) whose B-more mix was so good I rerecorded it into mp3 format so I could listen to it in the car.

that is one hot mix. i love it when a 'faceless' style such as dubstep meets some of the really prominent faces in crunk and grime. that sort of phenomenon is one of my favorite things in DJ mixes. i gotta say the idea of 'perfecting' a mix really is quite boring and myopic. i always felt the word "CHANGE" was at the heart of spinning, so the notion of matching different things flawlessly as a holy grail of the medium seems rather off. to each their own...

KK - We have to stop meeting like this! :)

Fair dues on the backstory - I thought you were having a bitch at something that was buried months ago.. sorry for jumping the gun.

Interesting DJ nerdism there as well. And I agree that a lot of this kinda talk can be fairly academic...the point I was trying to make is that a lot of DJ's seem to seriously underestimate their audience's abilites to make out whats actually going on behind the decks... Ive had people come up to me 5 YEARS after a show and rant about a particular mix in a set (a good one in this case), and from my own experiences at gigs, I know that 'the kids' remember the bad mixes as well (if not more) than the good...

'Flawless mixes' are fucking boring. kick out the jams, KK - keep it gutter and fuck tha biters...

Wow.. surprisingly cliched words coming from a man of such usual eloquence... when did 'the audience notices mistakes' turn into 'only flawless mixes count'?? I wasnt in anyway dissing KK's skills, just one of the sentiments expressed in his post...

Nice bit of misrepresentation there Mr.Gutterbreakz!

Yeah your right Evergreen. The whole notion (which I never mentioned BTW) of a DJ matching two tracks flawlessly is just madness!! what am I thinking?? ;)
